Bristol Transformed - Printmaking for Resistance

Printmaking for Resistance Workshop

Saturday 6th April. 1- 4pm, Malcolm X Centre.

Often used to address social and political themes, printmaking has a longstanding history with resistance movements around the world. Protest posters, Zines, Placards -  Printmaking is both a means of communication and an art form. The process of making prints works best when it is collaborative, making it a community activity that can easily enter the public sphere. It's an affordable, accessible and powerful way of spreading ideas - and its fun!   Drop by anytime between 1 and 4 and print your own lino cut, by hand and with our lovely old Adana Press. See some of the posters printed at Cato Press and find out how you can start carving giant woodblock prints at our monthly Community Print Nights.

Community Print Night - New Dawn Traders - 17th March

Join us and the New Dawn Traders in collectively carving a giant blue whale woodcut. We'll work together to gently carve away the shape of a blue whale for the New Dawn Traders to use on their cargo sailing ships and their stall in markets in harbours across the world!

No experience necessary we carve plywood using simple Japanese tools which we will demonstrate how to use when you arrive. During this event there will also be opportunity to hand print and take home a small pocket sized fish from a whole shoal of fish that are being designed to swim alongside the whale. Feel free to bring along a t-shirt or bag to print onto during the event.

Due to the increasing popularity of our community print nights, this month we're running this event as a ticketed event for a minimal fee of £3.50 which will go towards supporting the workshop in the purchase of ply and tool sharpening that will keep these events running.

Grab your ticket before they're gone!!

The New Dawn Traders are a cargo by sail shipping company who create meaningful links between food producers, shipping in order to bring you food and drink from around the world in a fair and sustainable way.

Through their products & events they are invigorating a new maritime culture around fair transport ships, the goods they carry & the communities they support. There journey is a symbolic one, which aims to continue the global movement of bringing food trade to a human scale & consumerism to a conscious level.
